General Science: The Human Digestive System

The Digestive System is a complex series of organs that convert food into energy and basic nutrients to feed the entire body. It involves mechanical and chemical processes.

    Key Organs and Functions

    • Mouth: Digestion begins here with Salivary Amylase, which breaks down starch into sugars.
    • Stomach: Uses Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) and the enzyme Pepsin to digest proteins. The mucus lining protects the stomach from acid.
    • Small Intestine: The site of complete digestion and absorption of nutrients through finger-like projections called Villi.
    • Large Intestine: Absorbs water and minerals from undigested food and forms waste.

    Associated Glands

    • Liver: The largest gland in the body; secretes Bile which helps in the emulsification of fats.
    • Pancreas: Secretes pancreatic juice containing enzymes like Trypsin (proteins) and Lipase (fats).
    • Gall Bladder: Stores the bile juice produced by the liver until it is needed in the small intestine.

Question for you: Which part of the digestive system is primarily responsible for the absorption of water from the remaining indigestible food matter?
